The Calm in the Complexity

Helping founders and leaders see what they’re too close to see

I've seen the machine from the inside.

I was born on January 1st. For 50+ years, I felt the pressure to start strong, finish strong, and never stop running.

About Derek Richards — Operational Consultant

The Journey as a Systems Architect

The Systems Architect

For 30+ years, I bridged IT systems, digital transformation, and global logistics. From earning my MPhil to founding tech operations in Turkey, I built scalable infrastructure and engineered automated workflows to boost operational efficiency.

The Pro-Social Leader

Alongside the corporate climb, I established 'Creating Chapters' to support at-risk youth. Designing mentorship programmes with an 80% success rate, I realised that even the best systems fail without the human element.

The Reality Check

While managing high-profile automotive fleets at DHL and BMW, and running my own consultancy (Zengi Limited), I saw firsthand the industrial complex of striving. Then came a health scare. I realised the machine was designed to exploit, leading to inevitable executive burnout.

The Unsubscriber

I closed the company and stepped off the conventional treadmill. Today, I work entirely free of corporate shackles as an independent strategic partner. I also "brain dump" my 30 years of expertise for the common good at Calm in Complexity.

"Apart from my director, I don't have anyone I can talk to like I can with you."

When my friend said that, I realised my superpower wasn't just systems thinking or operational logistics. It was space-holding. The ability to listen without an agenda, see the patterns, and offer a way out of the noise.

"I untangle the complex so the human can breathe."

The Integration

Today, I bridge three worlds: the operational, the philosophical, and the human. I don't choose between them—I weave them together. I spend my time helping other leaders untangle their businesses by getting the basics right and stripping out the noise.

But I'm not all business. When I'm not consulting, you'll find me guerrilla coding, tailoring my own clothes, or dreaming of sailing. Because creativity isn't a distraction from strategy—it's the foundation of it.
